نویسنده
چکیده
We have identified two quiescent GRBs (bursts having two or more widelyseparated distinct emission episodes) in which the post-quiescent emission exhibits distinctly different characteristics than the pre-quiescent emission. In these two cases (BATSE GRBs 960530 and 980125), the second emission episode has a longer lag, a smoother morphology, and softer spectral evolution than the first episode. Although the pre-quiescent emission satisfies the standard internal shock paradigm, we demonstrate that the post-quiescent emission is more consistent with external shocks. We infer that some observed soft, faint, long-lag GRBs are external shocks in which the internal shock signature is not observed. We further note that the peak luminosity ratio between quiescent episodes is not in agreement with the ratio predicated by the lag vs. peak luminosity relationship. We briefly discuss these observations in terms of current collapsar jet models. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts—methods: data analysis

GRB 990123 was a long, complex gamma-ray burst accompanied by an extremely bright optical flash. We present the collective constraints on the bulk Lorentz factor for this burst based on estimates from burst kinematics, synchrotron spectral decay, prompt radio flash observations, and prompt emission pulse width. Combination of these constraints leads to an average bulk Lorentz factor for GRB 990...

It is well known that high-energy emission (MeV-GeV) has been observed in a number of gamma-ray bursts, and temporally-extended emission from lower-energy gamma rays through radio wavelengths is well established. An important observed characteristic of some bursts at low energy is quiescence: an initial emission followed by a quiet period before a second (post-quiescent) emission. Evidence for ...

The UVOT telescope on the Swift observatory has detected optical afterglow emission from GRB 050319. The flux declines with a power law slope of α = −0.57 between the start of observations some 230 seconds after the burst onset (90s after the burst trigger) until it faded below the sensitivity threshold of the instrument after ∼ 5 × 10s. There is no evidence for the rapidly declining component ...

Based on near-infrared polarimetric observations we constrain the degree of linear polarization of the afterglow light of GRB 000301C to less than 30% 1.8 days after the burst. The question whether a GRB is always accompanied by a collimated outflow, often called a jet, is one of the key issues of current GRB research. Because of relativistic effects a collimated explosion will reduce the deduc...

On January 6 2004, the IBAS burst alert system triggered the 8 gamma–ray burst (GRB) to be detected by the INTEGRAL satellite. The position was determined and publicly distributed within 12 s, enabling ESA’s XMM–Newton to take advantage of a ToO observation just 5 hours later during which the X–ray afterglow was detected. Observations at optical wavelengths also revealed the existence of a fadi...
